China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) has made a deepwater gas field discovery in the northern part of the South China Sea, the company said late on Tuesday.
The state-owned offshore oil and gas specialist found a mid-sized volume of gas in the Lingshui 25-1 well, it said on its website (www.cnoocltd.com).
The well should produce 35.6 million cubic feet of gas per day and is in water 980 metres deep, the company's statement said.
Last August, CNOOC discovered a larger well capable of producing 56.5 million cubic feet per day, the Lingshui 17-2, in the same basin about 150 kilometres (94 miles) south of the Chinese island province of Hainan.
